Tic Toc Tangerine - Oil on Panel - 20cm x 30cm

The clock is ticking

Here’s the first painting of this new year. It took quite a struggle to make it because of self-confidence issues. It’s incredible how quickly my self-confidence (as a painter) vanishes even though it sometimes seems to take ages to take it back to an appropriate level; a level at which I’m not having to fight myself from running away from my easel. Stepping away from the easel should be my own decision, made by the determination to look away from the painting for a few seconds, take some distance and then look at it with new insights on how to make it better than the state it is in.

With this painting, I deliberately chose a limited palette (alizarin + phthalo green, cad yellow, white) because it is something I have been exploring for quite a while now: How to achieve a specific mood with a limited palette. Those that have been following me for a while will have noticed that I am changing my palette a few times in the last couple of years. It’s a fun way to learn and to keep things fresh.

I’ve also used quite a bit of palette knife in this one. Finding a good balance between brushwork and palette knife work is also a challenge imho.

Confidence and belief in self is such a bane and burden for artists :-/ Truly Johan you have nothing to worry about, though I do know and understand where you are coming from. This constant chatter in the head (I like to think of it as ‘separate from me’ hence the objectified description), harping on and on. Perhaps that is why there is so much joy to be found in a free space to paint and draw when the chattering voice has been sent on a holiday… 🙂

I like your palette a lot – and I like your idea behind limiting the colours you use. The clock has an almost liquid metal feel which is really lovely (liquid time appeals to me as it seems to stretch :)).

It is nice to see you updating more here, keep painting! 🙂
