Still life has been my roots since my very first painting days. It has put my 2 feet on the ground while learning the “metier”. I learned how to paint with oils at the Stedelijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunst in Leuven, Flanders (also known as SLAC.) from the amazing Luc Oeyen. I had already studied drawing at SLAC for 4 years, but using the still life as a subject to learn how to paint was a great method, because there’s so much that one needs to think about when working in color.
Now that I taken a few steps forward and I am focussing on the human figure, I will not forget my roots and keep painting small still lifes purely for fun, if not for studying. My current studio is too small to have models sit for me anyway.
Below is a selection of still life paintings.
